The day after Dom's special day we decided to sojourn down to Geeveston to take in some of Masaaki's Sushi, reputed to be the best Sushi in Tassie. It was a fair hike and there was some fairly high expectations after missing Matthew Evans's food at Salamanca. More dashed hopes were the only thing we found, after arriving to discover his shop was shut, as he was off volunteering after the bush fires or some such thing! Bah! Such a bad time for community mindedness! We pulled ourselves together with some lovely pies, pasties and cake, for the "Day After Dom's Birthday" at a local bakery.
Fortified, we ploughed through the interesting, and pro-forestry, Geeveston Forest and Heritage Centre. Next stop, The Wall of Lollies - an old fashioned Lolly Shop where the kids picked out some more edible delights to continue Dom's birthday festivities.
On the way to the Tahune Airwalk we soaked up the forest and stopped to try to help some Japanese tourists who had locked their keys in the car and had no mobile reception. After giving them a coathanger, we headed off to try to gather some help and received a complete lack of compassion and interest by the manager at the Tahune. No brownie points gained there. We figured we'd just have to let the RACT on the way out but thankfully for them, they were gone. Maybe the coathanger had done it's job!
The weather was a trying combination of very cold, and drizzly. The shorts that we'd put on that morning were not really cutting it, but we headed up into the canopy regardless and got by! It was Sascha's turn to be grumpy and put out for second half of the walk -we take good care to share around the role of family misery maker. He was busting, actually, and improved significantly once that basic hurdle was overcome!
The walk itself was quite spectacular, if I didn't look down or put too much thought into how high I was! Isaac, Dom and I also enjoyed a little "dessert" walk amongst the lovely Huons near the river, whose name escapes me. Good, moist fun! Less fun, getting a fright on the way back, as Sasch and Paul came to meet us and hid in the base of a giant tree, while waiting. To Paul's credit, he was actively trying not to scare me, but he did... and it made me mad! For a good few minutes!
