Here we are back in Hobart! This time the boys and I are accompanied by my parents and Paul is missing. He is off singing and having a boy’s own time in Melbourne doing his stuff with Hallelujah Junction. Check him out here if interested: http://www.abc.net.au/classic/content/2013/03/22/3720708.htm
We have loved soaking up some time in a larger space. My parents have some points to spend so we are comfortably situated at Seven Mile Beach in a 2 bedroom house in a resort! The kids have enjoyed a couple of swims, bike rides and a bit of tennis for PE! And we have been ploughing through some school work! We all hate it sooo much! Aaaah! Who would have thought it would be the worst part of our trip. Come to think of it really, who wouldn’t?! Thank goodness the worst bit is NOT living in a caravan, spending all your time with your family or discovering a little more about your own backyard!!
One bit of school we really enjoyed was our unit on Andy Goldsworthy, an artist who works with natural materials. The kids work is above. As is nature's.
We had hoped to surprise Mum and Dad by meeting them at MONA on our way to Seven Mile Beach. Unfortunately, they had left before we arrived! We (mostly) enjoyed MONA!! We had to leave to settle in to the resort before dark so we didn't spend long enough to really get to explore all of it, including the loos we had heard a bit about. We certainly did accidently manage to see some of it, that we had not planned to see with the kids, prompting a hasty retreat!! It's a slightly unsettling feeling, always a little worried about what might be round the next corner!! Isaac certainly learned a new word/concept or two that thankfully no one else noticed!! Our highlight piece, I think, was the words in water drops. The kids enjoyed "loving" and "hating" various artworks on their MONA ipods and playing on and under the pink cushions. Paul and I really loved the architecture, the sense of humour apparent everywhere and the free outdoor jazz. We all loved the food, saying hello to the chooks, in the vineyard on the way in, and finding a (blue) Araucana egg in the nesting boxs!

We spent a delicious and inspiring evening at Andrew Stirling's house in South Hobart. He was in Andrew Booker's class in medicine at Newcastle University, and Dr Booker told us to give him a call when we were in town. So we did and he very generously invited us over for pizza and a tour of his beautiful and sustainable house. The views were spectacular and the pizza was
Best bit so far here has been our day out in Sorell and Richmond yesterday. We all absolutely loved picking and eating the huge and tasty strawberries at the Sorell Fruit Farm. The pears made it onto the menu tonight in a rocket and parmesan salad but the apples are still decorating our fruitbowl and overflowing onto the bench. We are not short of apples, that’s for sure!! Richmond was lovely and historic but not as yummy!
The obligatory Cadbury Chocolate Factory visit today was pretty poor in comparison but the kids enjoyed the experience. The chocolate was cheap and we bought more today than we usually do in about year. I guess that will be my downfall over the next few weeks… on at least a couple of levels!
On the downslope out of Tassie after this weekend (heading back up the West Coast to Devonport) and I will really miss this place. Tasmania, we will be back!
Elgaar Yoghurt, My toasted muesli and Sorell strawberries! Yum!
A few obligatory shots of Richmond So pretty... and of course, old. Didn't do much touristy stuff there but spent a bit of time soaking up the vibe around the river. I did the groceries while Mum and Dad organised some takeout for the kids and supervised their play in the park.

At the bridge, the kids found some grey nomads feeding the ducks and geese and snaffled up some of their bread to feed the birds themselves (after Dom broke the ice, of course). The birds were pretty big compared to Dom and pretty bossy- one taking a whole piece out of his hand and heading off with it and another pushing him around for more! Lots of laughs had by grown-ups, near and far.
