What a way to celebrate Australia Day: Waking up in our caravan at EPIC, Dom and I scrounged a bit of cupboard breakfast and then everyone headed off to the Farmers Markets. We were briefly tested by a false start visit to some sort of war-games convention before realising the markets were actually about 100m from where we camped! The boys started what would turn out to be actually a very healthy a delicious mostly blueberry breakfast, with a chocolate croissant which Paul declared to be the best he had ever eaten. Isaac even managed to get some on his socks and shoes.
We filled the van with a few days worth of local fresh produce and did some van set up while the boys scootered around under some stadium seating nearby and called us about every 30 seconds on the walkie talkie. Paul’s discreet comment about “there being a lot of traffic on this channel” got the message through to Isaac and the constant barrage settled a little bit!
We headed out to the Australian War Memorial with a picnic. It was so special to just spend some time being rather than doing… I think it’s a major aim of mine to spend a lot more of this year doing just that.

The Memorial itself was wonderful. The boys, and I, had some fun playing helicopter pilots and dressups etc but were also very moved but the stories of bravery and sacrifice. After a few tears and asking to leave during the real footage of bombing raids during the WWII sound and light show, Sascha wanted to be a superhero so he could “punch all the bombs out of the air and ban war”.
Our next stop was a visit to Sean and Lauren’s in Macquarie. We had a lovely garden tour prior to a brief but heavy storm which made Sean and Laurens house leak and had us wondering about our van. (Turned out a good Samaritan from Bundaberg put down our awning for us and folded up are furniture to stop it blowing away. The wind was fierce enough to blow some of Shannon and Rosalee’s awning away). Dinner was delicious and mostly from the garden. We left with a bag of tomatoes and zuchinis and have been steadily working our way thru them!! The kids all had a whale of a time especially enjoying some screen time (golf and skiing on the Xbox etc). It was so lovely to see more of the Chans and get more of sense of home and away life in Canberra. It really is such a lovely city. As we were walking out Lauren handed us a free pass to Questacon that she had been given when she bought membership for a couple of years… and our path for the next day was set!!
