I was a little apprehensive about driving on Fraser Island, having never done any sand work before...
Having stayed at a free camp about an hour south if Hervey Bay, we booked on the 1230pm ferry, to give us a little more leeway. Just as well! I wanted to get a bit of recovery equipment just in case things didn't go our way on the soft stuff. There turned out to be only just enough time to drop the van into storage, quick trip to ARB, and then to bunnings for a shovel. We made our ferry time with only a few minutes to spare.
After watching dolphins thrashing about fishing just near the dock, we made the short trip across to kingfisher bay. The fellow who booked us on the barge said the road was a little more challenging out, but we would be fine. So after fiddling about with our EZ deflator for a while we set off into the bush.
The first 10 minutes were a little hairy, with a steep ascent and very steep descent in soft sand with great humps on the way down. After that everything was gravy!
We drove down to Eurong via lake Mackenzie, and a great time was had by all.
Is it the roar of the sea that quiets the mind, on a morning beach walk, or simply the absence of children?! Probably a happy combination of the two. Whatever it is, I have returned to my loud children happy, but wondering why people find it so hard to sort out their rubbish! In less than 2 km of beach I returned with a full bucket of all sorts of trinkets of assorted plastics, foils, ropes etc all of which could fill a baby bird's (or any other sea creature you fancy) stomach and lead to it starving to death. Not a pretty image but one that was seared into my memory from a Lord Howe Island trip. In the museum I saw a video dissection of a young bird and the amount of plastic in it's digestive tract was impressive...
