Zoo time!
Our last official stay of the trip before Sydney was for a bit of Dubbo action. We took two days to absorb the Zoo. The first day required some schooling in the morning and then we got into our Western Plains efforts. We were very pleased to find the tickets lasted for two days so you could really take in all that you wanted.
Our first day we hired a cart and enjoyed some driving lessons with the kids. This was great fun for the grown-ups. Also great fun for the kid driving but very scary for the two not driving!! They found it very hard to keep it in their heads that the parent in front could easily drive completely from the passenger side if there was any trouble with the "official driver", and certainly in the case of Dom there was a lot more passenger driving being done! The animals were very fun, especially the mongooses and native birds not in any cages, but probably were on an equal footing with the enjoyment provided by the cart!!
The next day, which was a lot hotter, we took the car to fill in the gaps we had missed the previous day. The Spences met us in the play ground where Rose and Shan and Paul and I had a lovely catch up while the kids played hard! We realised we had all reached a new stage of our lives as parents, when aside from a quick trip to the toilet or two, we had uninterrupted adult conversation for about an hour or more! Highlight of animals this day was the feeding of the giraffes.

Our other main official engagement for Dubbo was to have an "end of school party" with the Spences as it would be the last time we saw them. It was stinking hot so we suggested coming to our caravan park which was replete with a pool and jumping pillow for some pizza and junk food. Unfortunately when the Spences arrived, the pool was shut due to an germy incident from one of the other, younger camp residents, earlier in the day. The kids would have gone in undeterred but had no choice in the matter. We made up for it with some play under the sprinkler and slippery jumping on the pillow whilst very wet! The lollies, melted chocolate bars and sparkly drink were enjoyed with great gusto by the kids and a few speeches and toasts were made. (Thanks Shannon for the picture that I didn't take!)
Paul and I cooked up some yummy pizza in the rather warm camp kitchen which, thankfully, the kids did not need too much of after their efforts with the lollies! The kids then retired into the caravan to their own devices while Shannon, Paul, Rosie and I chatted outside until late in the night, reflecting on this year and what the next might bring.
A few other things may have transpired in our stay in Dubbo, now just under a month ago, but if they did they were not memorable enough to stick with me til now and certainly not worth blogging about!!
